Leave part of your garden to be wild for Nature.

If you can do ANY 5 from the list of actions below, sign up HERE with your address and postcode. Then we’ll add your address to our list.

Choose one or more patches of your garden to be left wild;
Leave berries and seed heads on as food for birds;
Avoid using pesticides (they harm wildlife in the garden);
Avoid peat products (to avoid harming Nature elsewhere and to reduce carbon emissions);
Make a pond for wildlife (Find out how to make one: click here);
Let May be a “No Mow” month;
Make a refuge for wildlife - e.g. pile of sticks in a corner;
Use rainwater to water the garden (collect in a water butt).

Watch out for the wildlife in your garden.

Some more ideas:

Choose plants that don’t need to be watered;
Plant a tree (it stores carbon);
Use lower carbon organic fertiliser;
A wormery will turn kitchen waste (not meat) into worm compost fertiliser;
Collect fallen leaves to make leaf mould - a mulch to improve your soil;
Cut down on digging (it releases carbon);
Propagate with seeds and cuttings, and share with friends (& save money too);
Remove paving slabs and plant perennials.
Install a bird bath or mini-pond.
Put a "ladder" (sticks or stones) to help frogs climb out of the pond.
Put in window boxes with tiny water bowls.
Plant climbers to grow up hedges and walls.
Choose plants with single, not double, flowers to provide nectar to help pollinators, and plant in groups, if possible.
Help bees with a small saucer of gravel or little pebbles, topped up with rainwater.
Install a green roof.
In building work include bee bricks or spaces for swallows or swifts.
