The Beeston house has solar panels, double-glazing and work is in progress to install internal insulation on the solid walls. The owners say "We are very pleased with the results so far on this previously rather cold house. The insulation is being installed one room at a time, gradually working round the house. We really notice how cosy the insulated rooms have become and we'll be glad to show visitors round and tell them more about it."

ENERGY EFFICIENT HOMES OPEN - 25th April
This year during April and May a number of homes in the Nottingham area are taking part in a Green Open Homes event. Find out more at www.nottingham.greenopenhomes.net and look under Transition West Bridgford Open Homes. Most of the homes are in West Bridgford but on 25th April two homes in Beeston are open. To visit you need to book in advance via www.wbecohouses.co.uk. Every home includes a link to Eventbrite, where you can book your free visit.
This is a fantastic opportunity to visit a home that has been made more environmentally friendly and cheaper to heat. You can chat to the householders, find out what it is really like and ask questions. One householder in Beeston, whose house was open last year, said “We realised how good our internal insulation was when our plumber turned off our central heating one day in February and forgot to turn it on again. It was only six hours later that we noticed it was getting a bit cool and were surprised to discover that the heating had been off all that time”.

GREENING BEESTON ECO CHRISTMAS TREE - 18th - 29th December
Our "Eco Christmas Tree" is to be displayed at the Parish Church's Christmas Tree Festival, which takes place from 18th to 22nd December (and the trees will stay until 29th December). The challenge is to 'make' a tree, rather than buying one, and make our own decorations with recycled materials. It will cost nothing, except a bit of time. Most trees cause carbon emissions both from transporting the tree and from the lights, as well as disposing of them. The only emissions from our tree will be from the electricity for the lights, which are LED lights and use only 0.8 watts. See here for how we made the previous one in 2012.
GREENING BEESTON at "THIS IS BEESTON": Saturday 18th October 12 - 4pm
We will have a stall at this event at Barton’s Garage, which is to introduce students and local residents to what Beeston has to offer in terms of entertainment, businesses, community groups, local services. Running in conjunction with Oxjam Music Festival and Chilwell Road Re-Opening(?).
Greening Beeston's stall will promote recycling, recipes using leftovers, cycling and walking. We would like to attract new members. There will be leaflets and freebies, Greening display and home made bunting, doll’s house, and an easel for sharing tips. All welcome.

Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Eco Homes Week: 10th - 18th May 2014
This year two homes in Beeston, and several more in West Bridgford, are taking part in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Eco Open Homes event, which runs from 10th to 18th May. You can visit them and talk to the owners and find out what it's really like.
Altogether 7 homes are taking part in the Nottingham area. Visit http://everybodys-talking.greenopenhomes.net/ to find out more about the event. You can chat to the householders themselves and ask questions to find out about their experience. One householder said “During work on internal wall insulation our builder discovered the old pipes to the gas lights that were in the house originally. We had seen a line in one wall but assumed it was old electric wires”.
To visit any of these homes, you must book in advance via West Bridgford Eco Houses at http://wbecohouses.co.uk/. You can also find out how to visit the Creative Home Energy Project at the University of Nottingham, (on 10th May only).

Greening Beeston at Beeston Carnival on Saturday 13th July 2013
Greening Beeston will be at Beeston Carnival on Sat 13 July, encouraging local people to make their gardens bee-friendly and help to save the bee population. Bees are disappearing, possibly owing to over-use of pesticides, and without bees, we will have no pollination and therefore important foods like apples, plums, tomatoes, peas and beans will fail to grow in this country. In other words, without bees we face a serious food crisis. On the Greening Beeston stall at the Carnival will be bee-related information, activities and food to taste.

Greening Beeston's Eco Christmas Tree: 14th - 17th December 2012
The group is now planning an "Eco Christmas Tree" to be displayed at the Parish Church's Christmas Tree Festival, which takes place from 14th to 17th December. The challenge is to 'make' a tree, rather than buying one, and make our own decorations with recycled materials. It will cost nothing, except a bit of time. The only carbon emissions will be from the electricity for the lights, unless we can find another way to power them.
The Launch of Greening Beeston - 13th October 2012
Greening Beeston will be launched at John Clifford School on Saturday 13th October, 2 - 4 pm. Come along and find out how to make 5 simple changes which can help your household reduce energy consumption and therefore save money, as well as protecting the environment. Together we can make a difference.
Two years ago, after our campaign in Beeston Rylands, residents were found to be making savings of about 46,000kg of CO2, 67,000 litres of water and more than £8,000 per year. After the launch event at John Clifford, volunteers will distribute cards to households in Beeston asking them to make 5 simple changes and tell others about them by displaying the Greening Campaign’s ‘Leaf’ card in their windows. The cards will be counted, to find out how much Beeston residents are saving.
There will be stalls with ideas and energy-saving tips, displays by John Clifford children and community groups. You'll have the chance to make your own smoothie with a Smoothie Bike, as well as try other refreshments.
We'd welcome any community groups that would like to take part. Ring Janet Poliakoff on 925 6368 or contact us here.

Greening Beeston's stall at Beeston Carnival - 14th July 2012
Greening Beeston will be having a stall at Beeston Carnival on 14th July. We’d be very glad of any help with the stall, as well as setting up beforehand or clearing up afterwards. The Carnival actually starts at 12.00 and ends at about 4 or 4.30 but we will be setting up from 10.30 and the clearing up until after 5.00. Please let us know if you could be available to help for some of that time, so that we can plan in advance.
We’d also welcome things to sell or swap:
food (e.g. cakes), produce (e.g. preserves), plants, books, bric-a-brac, etc. for the stall. These can be brought along in the morning.
Come along and talk to us at the stall - find out about what we're doing and have a look at what we have to swap, sell or give away. Our next event is the Launch of Greening Beeston at John Clifford School on Saturday 13th October.

The Greening Beeston Public Meeting - Tuesday 27th September 2011
There will be a Greening Campaign Public Meeting on Tuesday 27th September at 7.30 at Beeston Baptist Church, Dovecote Lane, NG9 1HR. A group of local people need help to extend this simple, yet successful, campaign in Beeston. If you are concerned about environmental issues or want to learn some simple steps to save money and reduce your impact on the environment, please come along and find out more. All are welcome and refreshments will be available.
The Greening Campaign started when one person in a village in Hampshire decided to help her local community reduce the effects of climate change. Now it has spread to many parts of the country, including Beeston Rylands, where last year cards were distributed listing a few simple changes that can make a difference. Every year Rylands residents together are estimated to be saving 46,000 kg of carbon dioxide and 67,000 litres of water, as well as over £8,000 on electricity and gas bills.
The group are planning to launch the Greening Beeston Campaign in early 2012 with a public event, and then volunteers will be distributing cards to households in Beeston. The cards will have a list of simple energy-saving actions, such as turning off lights in a room when not needed, or doing the washing at 30 degrees. When five of the actions have been undertaken, the ‘leaf’ on the other side of the card can be displayed in a front window, so that the volunteers can count how many are taking part.
