Greening Beeston Annual Report – 2nd September 2015
OCT 2013 – initiated the disbanding of Transition Beeston and took over remaining funds
2014 – Hope Centre After School Club - sessions continued (including “Tweak my Beak” light-switch signs and planting dried peas)
Beeston Carnival – theme “Reduce Reuse Recycle”
Osram lightbulb trial – several of us took part in a trial of LED lightbulbs to provide comments/video for advertising campaign
Guided tour of Creative Energy Homes at University of Nottingham.
Heritage Open Day – “Make Do and Mend” – recycling and upcycling, sharing skills from the past and helping to build a sustainable heritage for the future.
Love Food Hate Waste training workshop – attended by Jill and Judith
“This is Beeston” student/community event – sharing ideas on recycling, using leftovers, saving energy
Beeston Christmas Tree Festival - Recycled tree
Also took part in Beeston Seed and Plant Swaps, Climate and Wildlife Events (organised by Broxtowe Borough Council) in Beeston Square and the Poliakoffs opened their home for Eco Homes Week in May
2015 – We hosted an Energy Switching Workshop in Beeston Library on behalf of Nottingham Energy Partnership
Dave Wood, a group member and local poet, approached us about the possibility of bidding for funding for a “Mind Greening” project incorporating mindfulness techniques, art and recycling workshops. We didn't feel able to take this on but are pleased that the project will now take place in Mental Health Week in October 2015 in conjunction with the Middle Street Resource Centre.
Beeston Carnival - we shared a stall with Fairtrade Beeston – gave away freebies and information about recycling, sold savoury food and cakes, made wallets from juice/milk cartons.
We took part again in the Beeston Seed and Plant Swaps, the Poliakoffs showcased the eco-adaptations to their Victorian house for a second year running and we continue to provide a recipe (using seasonal food, leftovers, energy-saving tips) for Beeston Express on a fortnightly basis.
We supported the initial meetings to discuss the future of Beeston post-tram, which became the “Sustainable Beeston” or “Beeston Continuum” project involving postgraduate architecture students from Nottingham University. Greening Beeston is mentioned in the students’ presentation and display which have been shared publicly and will continue to be developed.
Future plans include a stall at the Heritage Open Day event at the Pearson Centre on 12 Sept with the theme of “Something Old, Something New – learn/share ways to recycle and upcycle, share skills from the past and help to build a sustainable heritage for the future”.

Greening Beeston Annual Report – 27th September 2013
July to November 2012 – Greening Campaign – Phase 1, Beeston South. We launched this campaign at John Clifford Primary School on Saturday 13th October. Approximately 60 people attended. We had guest speakers, performances by the pupils and stalls for further information.
The Greening cards were then distributed in Beeston South. Two-three weeks later, we counted the cards. About 60 people placed the card in their window. We were disappointed with this number but felt that the campaign has some positive effects such as publicity for the group.
December 2012 – We created a tree at the Christmas Tree festival in Beeston Parish Church. We decided to create a recycled Christmas Tree to make people think about how wasteful Christmas can be and how we can reduce this. Janet, Jill, Drika, Judith, Sally and Mary did some great work putting it together and creating the decorations. Again, it generated some positive publicity and some lovely comments.
February 2013 – Greening Beeston started a cookbook. A sub group formed and started to collect recipes. It was decided that the book should start with a few recipes on the internet. It was later decided to start on a smaller and more manageable scale by submitting a recipe in each edition of the Beeston Express. This was mainly to encourage people to buy seasonal but it was to help people make the most of their gluts of their own fruit and vegetables.
March 2013 – On the 9th March Greening Beeston organised the seed swap at Wollaton Road Church Hall. This is now a successful annual event and this one had a good turn out.
May 2013 – Plant swap 4th May. We had a stall at the plant swap event. Our theme was Bees and their importance in food production and to biodiversity.
June 2013 – Beeston Carnival – We had a stall at the carnival again with a Save the Bees campaign. We had a good position and the event always helps publicise what we do. People were attracted to the Bee Hive and this led to further discussions.
July 2013 –September 2013 – We have started planning a cookery event at Hope Centre in Beeston. This is loosely based on a Live4less workshop.
